To engage the Wealth Of Wisdom to be found amongst older people |

FEAR OF CRIME The findings of Age Concern England's survey, based on 4000 respondents nationwide, come as no surprise. Yet we are prepared to tolerate a society in which 37% of people over the age of 50 years, and 47% over the age of 75 years, are afraid to go out at night. Statistically, older people are less likely to fall victim to street crime than any other age group, and yet two-thirds believe the older one gets the more likely it is; which is a reflection of the intimidating environment in which we live. Indeed the group most likely to be the victim of such attacks, and most likely to be the perpetrators, are young men between the ages of 13 years and 25 years.
CAMPAIGNING FOR SAFER COMMUNITIES Older people in the survey would also like to see more police on the streets, greater use of CCTV and intergenerational programmes to foster trust and understanding between older and young people. The fear of crime is much greater than the crime itself, and many caring and funloving younger people have no perception of how intimidating their behaviour might seem. |
