To engage the Wealth Of Wisdom to be found amongst older people |

ALTERNATIVES TO RESIDENTIAL CARE It is possible to support all older people for whom Social Services, as opposed to Health, are responsible in their own homes. For those for whom the cost would be prohibitive, or who chose a more communal way of life, very sheltered housing offers a very real alternative. It is possible to put just as much nursing and personal care into such developments with economies of scale resulting from outreach and day care. People are tenants or owner occupiers in their own right, with all the security of tenure that provides, have their own front door, defended space and control over the essentials of daily living; and are not subject to the financial assessment of CRAG. The Green Paper “Independence, Well-being and Choice” (March 2005) states: Extra Care Housing “offers a model which allows people to live in their own homes with a range of facilities and support designed to meet their needs. Extra Care Housing can also form the basis of a range of intermediate care and outreach services, preventing older people from going into hospital or facilitating the discharge of those who have been in hospital.” CAMPAIGNING FOR MORE IMAGINATIVE ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL RESIDENTIAL CARE
