AGEISM IN THE NHS

 

 

77% of General Practitioners taking part in an NOP survey in 2000 thought age limits existed in the NHS, and 16% admitted to not referring patients to secondary care because they thought they would not get treatment because of their age.

 

The NHS Improvement Plan: putting people at the heart of public service (2004) sets the following targets:

  • by 2010, 40% reduction in death from coronary heart disease – in people under 75 years of age;
  • by 2010, 20% reduction in death from cancer – in people under 75 years of age
