Age Concern Hampshire to Celebrate 40 Years of Making a Difference

Age Concern Hampshire is proud to announce that 2025 will mark the charity’s 40th birthday, celebrating four decades of positively supporting older people throughout their ageing journey. Since its founding in 1985, Age Concern Hampshire has been dedicated to improving the lives of older people across Hampshire, offering vital services that not only support older individuals but also their families and carers. 

To mark this significant milestone, Age Concern Hampshire will embark on a year-long celebration of its work, hosting a series of impactful events, fundraising opportunities, and initiatives to further its mission of serving the community. A key focus of the celebrations will be a summer fundraising campaign to raise much-needed funds for the refurbishment of the Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre in Locks Heath, ensuring we can continue to provide vital services for years to come. The campaign will culminate in a special dedication ceremony honoring one of our most significant and influential supporters.

SSAFA Hampshire Supports Age Concern Hampshire to Assist Older People Across the Region

New Forest Social Groups Launched by Age Concern Hampshire in Partnership with SNG

Age Concern Hampshire is delighted to announce the expansion of its social groups into the New Forest. In partnership with SNG (Sovereign Network Group), serving as an ambassador and match funder for the Hampshire Active Health Programme, the charity will establish new groups for residents in selected SNG New Forest schemes. This initiative is made possible through funding from Hampshire County Council and support from the physical activity charity, Energise Me. 

Following the success of the first phase in Basingstoke, the second phase will commence in early autumn, extending the program to various locations throughout the New Forest area. Both phases are set to run until early 2025. 

The project aims to make it easier for everyone to engage in social and physical activities, promoting a happier, healthier, and stronger future for local communities. Regular physical activity is proven to support both physical and mental health, and it’s essential for everyone to strive to be active every day. This is particularly important for individuals facing health inequalities, who are often less likely to participate in physical activities, which increases their risk of long-term health conditions and mental health challenges.

Hampshire Active Health Programme: 

The Hampshire Active Health Programme is managed by Energise Me, on behalf of Hampshire County Council, to support people at greater risk of negative impacts from the pandemic and protect the most vulnerable from Covid-19. Funding has been provided by the Contain Outbreak Management Fund (COMF) from the Department of Health and Social Care, which was specifically allocated to fund public health projects that would address health inequalities arising from the pandemic, and prevention projects that will prevent or mitigate unequal impact on populations in future outbreaks.  

Funding applications closed on 20th December 2023. Projects will be running until January 2025.

Age Concern Hampshire Rolls Out Four New Minibuses to Support Older People

Age Concern Hampshire is thrilled to unveil four brand-new minibuses, a vital upgrade to its transport fleet. These vehicles are set to enhance the charity’s mission of supporting older people who face challenges reaching the Care and Wellbeing Centres on their own or with the help of family and friends. 

Designed for accessibility and comfort, the minibuses feature tail lifts for effortless boarding and are staffed by trained passenger assistants to ensure every journey is safe and comfortable. This new fleet represents a critical investment in providing affordable, reliable transport, enabling individuals to access the care and connection they need.

The charity’s Care and Wellbeing Centres offer a comprehensive range of services tailored to the unique needs of older adults. From personalised care and mobility support to specialist dementia care and engaging activities, the centres aim to promote independence and overall wellbeing. For families and carers, these services provide much-needed respite, offering peace of mind and support.

Age Concern Hampshire Receives Funding from Abri Homes to Support Older Residents in Gosport and Alton

Age Concern Hampshire is thrilled to announce new funding from Abri, which will enable the enhancement of the charity’s Information Services providing financial advice to older people in Gosport and Alton. This grant will allow Age Concern Hampshire to extend its reach, providing both virtual and in-person support to vulnerable older residents who are facing financial hardships. 

With the ongoing rise in the cost of living, many older residents are experiencing heightened financial pressure, often struggling to cover essential costs such as heating, food, and medical expenses. Age Concern Hampshire recognises the significant impact this has on overall wellbeing and is committed to providing support to individuals in need. 

Trained ACH Volunteers provide financial guidance and personalised assistance with benefit checks to ensure residents are receiving their entitled support, they assist with online applications such as Attendance Allowance and the Blue Badge scheme. Additionally, they can offer help with form filling and provide information on various topics to support older individuals, facilitating easier access to essential resources. 

“This funding allows us to enhance our essential support for older Abri residents in Alton and Gosport,” said Brogan Rehill, Head of Fundraising and Volunteer Services at Age Concern Hampshire. “We’re committed to providing vital assistance to those facing financial challenges, helping them to manage the cost of living and improve their quality of life.” 

Cita, Communtities and Involvement manager at Abri said: “We’re proud to partner with Age Concern Hampshire and use the Abri community fund to help support older customers in Gosport and Alton. With the cost of living rising, we know that some of our customers need extra help, and this partnership allows us to provide the financial advice and support that makes a real difference locally.”

Information Hub

The success of this service relies on a team of trained dedicated volunteers who play an invaluable role in supporting older residents in need. To help expand this important initiative, Age Concern Hampshire is actively recruiting new volunteers. This presents a rewarding opportunity for individuals to make a positive impact in their community, develop new skills, and connect with people who may be isolated or in financial difficulty.

Age Concern Hampshire Unveils Christmas Campaign: “Let’s Spread Cheer into the New Year”

Age Concern Hampshire is thrilled to unveil their upcoming festive campaign, “Let’s Spread Cheer into the New Year.” This campaign highlights the vital role the charity’s services have played in not only helping older people feel supported, valued, and connected, but also in bringing much-needed cheer and positivity into their lives, as well as the lives of their families and carers. 

The key focus of this year’s campaign is to rally support from the public and corporate partners to ensure that the charity can continue its mission into 2025 and beyond. Donations raised through the campaign will enable Age Concern Hampshire to carry on offering these vital services, bringing much-needed cheer to even more older people in the year ahead. 

Through images and highlights from the past year, the campaign will showcase how essential Age Concern Hampshire services are in delivering vital support and spreading cheer to older people at a time of the year when older people can feel particularly isolated.

Age Concern Hampshire’s Quiz and Curry Evening Achieves Fundraising Success

Age Concern Hampshire’s Quiz and Curry Night proved to be a huge success, reflecting the generosity, community spirit, and shared commitment to supporting older people. The fundraising event, held on Friday, 25th October at Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre in Locks Heath, brought together staff, volunteers, and members of the wider community for an evening filled with fun, laughter, and goodwill. 

Local residents gathered for a delightful night of music, activities, and delicious food. The event featured a lively performance by the Soberton Strummers Ukulele Club, alongside an engaging quiz and raffle, which kept the guests entertained. A highlight of the evening was the homemade curry, prepared by the centre’s own chef, Stuart, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. 

Sarah Jacobs, Marketing Manager at Age Concern Hampshire, expressed her gratitude, saying: “We’d like to extend a big thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising event. Your contributions helped make the evening a wonderful success. The funds raised will allow us to make a significant and positive difference to the lives of older people in the local community.” 

Fundraising Event

Held in Locks Heath, the event received outstanding support from both local residents and the wider community. Generous donations, ticket sales, and volunteer efforts combined to make a meaningful impact, with over £650 raised in essential funds. ACH were grateful for the support of ‘in kind’ donations of food and beverages from local businesses as well individuals supporting with donations of prizes. The evening highlighted the power of coming together to uplift and support local communities.

Age Concern Hampshire Announce a Change in Leadership

Age Concern Hampshire announces a change in its leadership as their Chief Executive Officer announces that she is leaving her position.  Helen Callen has been CEO since 2018 and has taken the organisation through some challenging times and is proud of the charity’s achievements supporting older people across Hampshire.

“This decision was not made lightly, leading Age Concern Hampshire has been the greatest honour of my career,” said Helen Callen. “I am proud of our achievements, particularly through the Pandemic, which would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of the charity’s staff and volunteers, and I would like to thank them all”

However, whilst leaving her position, Helen is not leaving the charity and will be taking over as Chair of the Board. This voluntary role will allow her to support the new CEO ensuring a seamless transition whilst continuing her contribution to the charity.

The Board of Directors expressed their gratitude to Helen for all that she has done to ensure the organisation is sustainable, particularly in the challenging times during the pandemic. They are delighted that Helen has agreed to take on the role of Chair and to support the new CEO.

These changes start an exciting new chapter for Age Concern Hampshire, ensuring continuity and fresh leadership as the charity works to support older people in Hampshire.

Growing Dementia Crisis Heightens Strain on Unpaid Carers

As the UK’s population grows older, the number of people living with dementia is also rising, which in turn increases the number of unpaid family carers. It’s currently estimated that one in three people will take on the role of a carer for someone with dementia at some point in their lives, with many finding themselves caring for multiple relatives affected by this difficult condition.

The significant pressure faced by these carers often leads to considerable distress, anxiety, and a heightened risk of burnout and deterioration in their health. With over 700,000 people in the UK currently fulfilling the role of primary unpaid carers for individuals with dementia, it is crucial to ensure that comprehensive support services are in place.

To address this growing need, Age Concern Hampshire offers essential services through its Care & Wellbeing Centres, providing affordable day care specifically designed for those with dementia. These facilities offer much-needed respite for carers, giving them the opportunity to rest and attend to their own needs while ensuring that their loved ones receive quality care in a safe and supportive environment.
