BMW volunteers make a difference at Frogmore Care & Wellbeing Centre

We recently welcomed a team from BMW’s national head office in Farnborough to our Frogmore Care & Wellbeing Centre for a corporate volunteering day.

The 15 volunteers spent the day helping around the centre and garden, contributing a fantastic 75 hours of volunteering. The practical work they completed has been estimated to be worth around £1,500.

But it wasn’t just the practical support that made a difference. The volunteers also spent time chatting with people who attend Frogmore, with several saying that this was one of the things they particularly enjoyed about the day.

We asked the BMW team to complete our new corporate volunteering feedback form after their visit. They rated their experience 5 out of 5 and told us they felt the day had a positive impact on both the people attending Frogmore and the wider centre team.

For BMW, the day also provided opportunities for team building and staff wellbeing, while helping them meet their CSR and social value objectives.

Their overall feedback was:

“The team had a great day and really felt they made an impact.”

They also said they would definitely be interested in volunteering with us again.

A long-standing partnership

The volunteering day was coordinated by Community Matters, who have been supporting Frogmore for a number of years and help bring corporate volunteer groups into the centre.

Their support goes back even further than the opening of Frogmore. Before the centre opened, Community Matters helped with jobs including painting and getting furniture ready. Since then, they have continued to bring corporate teams to Frogmore to help with practical projects, particularly in the garden.

We’re really grateful to BMW, Community Matters and all the volunteers who give their time to support Frogmore. Their help makes a genuine difference to the centre and the people who use it. If you would like to find out more about getting involved in our volunteering opportunities, please email supporters@ageconcernhampshire.org.uk.

Early Access to Dementia Day Care Helps People Stay Connected and Engaged

Family Carers
Early access to day care can significantly improve quality of life for people living with dementia, yet long waiting lists for formal diagnosis and assessment are delaying access to vital support.

Age Concern Hampshire, which runs Care & Wellbeing Centres across the county, highlights that families can access valuable support while awaiting a formal diagnosis. The charity offers activities that include Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) and reminiscence sessions, interventions shown in research to support memory, communication, and cognitive function.

Early engagement with day care services also helps reduce isolation, supports emotional wellbeing, and encourages physical and social activity. Families frequently notice improvements in mood, confidence, and communication when support begins early.

Family Carers

“Very often, there can be long waits for formal assessments, leaving people without the structured support they need,” said Hannah Park, Head of Operations at Age Concern Hampshire. “Accessing day care early ensures people can benefit from therapies and social engagement throughout the whole of their dementia journey.”

Age Concern Hampshire runs dedicated Care & Wellbeing Centres across the county, providing tailored day care services for people living with dementia. Free taster days are available at all Care & Wellbeing Centres, allowing families to experience the service before making any commitment. Age Concern Hampshire launches five-year ‘Living Well in Later Life’ project with National Lottery support

ACH Saturday Opening
Age Concern Hampshire is proud to announce the launch of Living Well in Later Life, a new five-year programme made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund. The project will support older people across Hampshire to stay active, connected and confident as they age.

Living Well in Later Life will offer physical activities and wellbeing sessions delivered through Age Concern Hampshire’s Care & Wellbeing Centres and local community venues. The sessions are designed especially for older people who may feel isolated, inactive or unsure about joining mainstream activities, offering a gentle, friendly way to move more, meet others and feel part of their community.

Sessions will focus on strength, balance, mobility and confidence, while also creating space for conversation, laughter and connection. Everything is shaped around what older people tell us they want and need.

The project is expected to make a real difference, with ambitions for:

  • 70% of participants to become more physically active

  • 65% to improve their balance, strength or mobility

  • 75% to feel better in themselves and less isolated

  • 80% to feel more connected to their local community

Alongside the benefits for older people, Living Well in Later Life will invest in staff and volunteer development, with specialist training to support safe, inclusive activity for older adults. This will help embed prevention, wellbeing and physical activity at the heart of Age Concern Hampshire’s services for years to come.

ACH Saturday Opening
Volunteers are a vital part of this project, and Age Concern Hampshire is now keen to hear from people interested in supporting groups in the Basingstoke and Southampton areas. Volunteers don’t need to be fitness experts – just friendly, reliable and keen to help older people feel welcome and supported. Training and ongoing support will be provided.

The project also encourages people to think about wellbeing in a wider sense, helping older adults feel connected not only to their communities, but to the world around them, including the importance of sustainability and looking after our environment as part of healthy ageing.

For more information about Living Well in Later Life, volunteering opportunities, or other Age Concern Hampshire services, visit www.ageconcernhampshire.org.uk or call 01962 868545.

Easing the strain for family carers in Hampshire

Family Caregivers
This November, for National Family Caregivers Month, Age Concern Hampshire is highlighting both the dedication and challenges faced by the thousands of people across Hampshire who provide unpaid care for someone living with dementia, most of whom are family members. With over 25,000 people in the county providing unpaid care, many find themselves balancing multiple responsibilities while coping with the emotional and physical strain of caring for a loved one.

Providing care can be overwhelming, and accessing the support carers are entitled to is often complicated. Many families are unaware of funding options that could ease the financial burden, such as Local Authority support and Attendance Allowance. Navigating the application process can be time consuming and feel confusing, leaving carers without the help they need and deserve.

Age Concern Hampshire’s Information Service team is available to guide carers through these challenges, offering advice, support, and practical assistance with applications. Their goal is to ensure carers do not miss out on financial support that can make a real difference in their daily lives.

In addition, Age Concern Hampshire provides vital respite through its Care and Wellbeing Centres in Dibden, New Milton, Locks Heath, and Yateley. These centres offer  tailored day care for people living with dementia, including stimulating activities and social engagement with transport and lunch optional. Carers benefit from the opportunity to have time to themselves and focus on their own wellbeing while knowing their loved ones are supported in a safe and friendly environment.

Family Caregivers

Hannah Park, Head of Operations at Age Concern Hampshire, said, “Family carers in Hampshire give so much, often without recognition. Between the emotional strain and navigating complex support systems, it is essential they have access to guidance and practical help. Our teams are here to make that process easier and to provide respite so carers can recharge.”
