Mountbatten Hampshire teams up with Age Concern Hampshire for new social group in Southampton

Age Concern Hampshire and Mountbatten Hampshire have teamed up to run a friendly new social group, to boost companionship and activity for older people.

The free weekly drop-in sessions, run by Age Concern Hampshire in the heart of Southampton’s West End, at Mountbatten Hampshire’s Frances Sheldon Centre, aim to ensure a happier, healthier and stronger future for those who take part.

Whether you are a carer or receiving treatment, feeling isolated, or just looking to meet new people, anyone aged over 50 is welcome to attend for a chat, coffee and movement.

Jemma Saunders, Wellbeing Coordinator at Age Concern Hampshire, said: “We’re excited to be launching this new social group at Mountbatten Hampshire’s Frances Sheldon Centre. These sessions give older people a welcoming space to meet others, have a chat and take part in gentle, enjoyable activities. It’s always rewarding to see new connections forming and people growing in confidence week by week.”

Brogan Rehill, Head of Strategy, Partnerships & Community Impact at Age Concern Hampshire, added: “Partnership working is key to making groups like this possible, and we’re delighted to be working with Mountbatten Hampshire to reach more older people in the community. Continued support from partners and funders is vital to help us sustain and grow these important social opportunities across Hampshire.”

Mountbatten Hampshire CEO, Becky McGregor, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting this brand new social group, giving Hampshire residents
an opportunity to meet together and take part in activities, in our welcoming Frances Sheldon Centre.”

Head of Rehabilitation and Enablement, Mary Banks, said: “These brilliant drop-in sessions are great for mental and physical health and you would be very welcome to join us. Meet new, like‑minded people, take part in regular physical activity and be stronger and healthier.”

How to be at the weekly drop-in sessions:

      Sessions take place every Thursday, from 11am until 1pm.

      Sessions are free and you can drop-in, with no commitment.

Age Concern Hampshire launches five-year ‘Living Well in Later Life’ project with National Lottery support

Age Concern Hampshire is proud to announce the launch of Living Well in Later Life, a new five-year programme made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund. The project will support older people across Hampshire to stay active, connected and confident as they age.
 
Living Well in Later Life will offer physical activities and wellbeing sessions delivered through Age Concern Hampshire’s Care & Wellbeing Centres and local community venues. The sessions are designed especially for older people who may feel isolated, inactive or unsure about joining mainstream activities, offering a gentle, friendly way to move more, meet others and feel part of their community.
 
Sessions will focus on strength, balance, mobility and confidence, while also creating space for conversation, laughter and connection. Everything is shaped around what older people tell us they want and need.
 
The project is expected to make a real difference, with ambitions for:
 

  • 70% of participants to become more physically active

  • 65% to improve their balance, strength or mobility

  • 75% to feel better in themselves and less isolated

  • 80% to feel more connected to their local community

Alongside the benefits for older people, Living Well in Later Life will invest in staff and volunteer development, with specialist training to support safe, inclusive activity for older adults. This will help embed prevention, wellbeing and physical activity at the heart of Age Concern Hampshire’s services for years to come.

ACH Saturday Opening
Volunteers are a vital part of this project, and Age Concern Hampshire is now keen to hear from people interested in supporting groups in the Basingstoke and Southampton areas. Volunteers don’t need to be fitness experts – just friendly, reliable and keen to help older people feel welcome and supported. Training and ongoing support will be provided.
 

The project also encourages people to think about wellbeing in a wider sense, helping older adults feel connected not only to their communities, but to the world around them, including the importance of sustainability and looking after our environment as part of healthy ageing.

Helping Older People Stay Safe and Independent at Home

Help at Home
Age Concern Hampshire’s Help at Home Service continues to provide vital practical support and companionship to older people across the county, helping them stay safe, independent, and connected in their own homes. By assisting with everyday household tasks such as cleaning, shopping, meal preparation, and light domestic chores, the service helps reduce the risks that can arise when these activities become more physically demanding.
 
As people get older, routine chores like bending to clean, carrying shopping bags, reaching high shelves, or moving around cluttered spaces can significantly increase the risk of slips, trips, and falls. Research shows that one in three people aged 65 and over experiences a fall each year, rising to almost half of people aged 80 and over. Many of these falls happen in the home while carrying out everyday tasks and are a leading cause of injury, hospital admission, and loss of independence among older people.
 
Without support, older people may feel pressure to push themselves to complete chores they are no longer physically comfortable doing, increasing fatigue, isolation, and the likelihood of accidents. Regular visits from a trusted helper not only ensure tasks are completed safely but also provide companionship, reassurance, and social connection, which are essential for maintaining confidence and wellbeing.

Age Concern Hampshire Welcomes Corporate Support from Lawcomm Solicitors

We welcomed the generous support of Lawcomm Solicitors, who played a key role in helping to deliver festive celebrations for older people across the county this Christmas. As part of the partnership, members of the Lawcomm team joined clients and staff at Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre on Wednesday 17th December, volunteering their time to support the Christmas lunch and take part in festive activities, helping to create a warm, joyful atmosphere for those attending.
 
In addition to volunteering on the day, Lawcomm Solicitors’ financial support enabled Age Concern Hampshire to provide Christmas gifts, festive food and entertainment across all four of its Care and Wellbeing Centres, ensuring that hundreds of older people were able to enjoy a special celebration during what can be a particularly isolating time of year.

New Foot Clinics to Boost Confidence and Mobility for Older People

We are committed to supporting older people across the county to live well and maintain their independence. Expanding our services is central to this mission, ensuring that practical care and support are accessible to everyone who needs it. Helping Patients Thrive: Age Concern Hampshire Continues to Deliver Impactful Hospital to Home Support

Age Concern Hampshire continues its long-standing commitment to supporting older people across the county through its Hospital to Home Service, delivered in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The service operates at Alton Community Hospital, Gosport War Memorial Hospital and Petersfield Community Hospital, helping patients during their stay and ensuring a smooth, safe transition home.
 

Coordinators work closely with patients on the wards, offering a range of engaging activities that support rehabilitation, wellbeing and confidence. From themed events such as the much-loved Mad Hatter’s Tea Party to seasonal celebrations and social sessions, the service enhances the hospital experience and brings moments of joy, connection and community to patients.

Easing the strain for family carers in Hampshire

Over 25,000 people in Hampshire are providing unpaid care for loved ones with dementia – and we know how challenging it can be.

Caring can be overwhelming, and accessing the support carers are entitled to is often complicated. Many families are unaware of funding options that could ease the financial burden, such as Local Authority support and Attendance Allowance. Navigating the application process can be time consuming and feel confusing, leaving carers without the help they need and deserve. As we approach 2026, Age Concern Hampshire is inviting compassionate individuals to volunteer and support older people across the county. With Hampshire’s ageing population continuing to grow, the charity is seeking additional volunteers to help maintain and expand its vital services.
 
Age Concern Hampshire is an independent charity dedicated to improving the well-being of older people through its Care and Wellbeing Centres, Foot Care clinics, Hospital to Home support, and community initiatives. Volunteers are essential to ensuring older residents feel valued, supported, and connected.
 
Volunteering with Age Concern Hampshire provides an opportunity to build meaningful connections, gain new skills, and contribute to the local community. Whether you can spare an hour a week or more, every contribution helps maintain independence, provide companionship, and enhance quality of life for older people and their carers.
 
Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Trustees – contribute to the strategic direction and governance of the charity.

  • Foot Care Receptionists – welcome clients and support smooth clinic operations.

  • Administrative Support – assist with office tasks to ensure services run efficiently.

  • Support at Care and Wellbeing Centres – help with activities, social interaction, and day care services.

We hosted a special dedication ceremony at the Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre in Locks Heath to honour the life and legacy of the late Dr Colin Godber OBE. As a voluntary board member of Age Concern Hampshire, Dr Godber brought thoughtful dedication to every aspect of his role, shaping services for older people across the county and beyond. On 2nd October, the Centre was officially dedicated in his memory, including the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Family members, trustees, the local mayor, and invited guests attended, celebrating Dr Godber’s lifelong commitment to community wellbeing.

Age Concern Hampshire Launches Christmas Campaign to Support Older People During Winter

Age Concern Hampshire is launching its annual Christmas campaign, Past, Present, and Future, to support older people through the challenges of the winter season. Winter can be a particularly difficult time for older people. Age Concern Hampshire is addressing these winter pressures by helping residents access essential financial support and providing guidance with form-filling through its Information Service. This includes assistance with benefit applications that can help with heating and fuel costs. By removing these barriers, the charity ensures older people receive the support they need to stay safe and well during the colder months.​
 
Fall prevention is another crucial focus. Through its Care and Wellbeing Centres and Foot Care clinics, Age Concern Hampshire helps older people maintain mobility, manage foot health, and reduce the risk of accidents. These services not only protect physical wellbeing but also contribute to independence and confidence at home.
 
The campaign also tackles isolation and loneliness, which can intensify during the Christmas season. Support is available at the charity’s Care and Wellbeing Centres, or through assistance in the home via the Help at Home service. In addition, practical support and social groups help older people stay connected, engaged, and supported throughout the winter.

Providing Essential Support for Independent Living

As the UK’s ageing population continues to grow, maintaining independence in later life has become a significant priority for older adults and their families. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), by 2041, there will be more than 20 million people aged 65 and over in the UK. This increasing number of older adults highlights the growing demand for services that help individuals maintain their independence at home.
Age Concern Hampshire is addressing this need through their Help at Home service, which is designed to support older people in living independently and comfortably in their own homes. The charity’s professional and friendly Home Helpers offer tailored support to make everyday tasks more manageable for older individuals.

We are looking for compassionate and empathetic individuals across Hampshire, to support our Help at Home Service. We support older people who would like help doing jobs and daily chores which aim to improve their quality of life and keep them independent at home.

Foot Health Practitioner
Hampshire-wide
We provide the clients and the venue and engage self-employed Foot Health Practitioners (FHPs) to provide a 6-weekly toenail cut and a basic foot health check for each client. If the foot health check identifies further treatment required, the practitioner will recommend medical or podiatry attention as appropriate.

Join Age Concern Hampshire this Volunteers Week and help improve lives of older people 

ACH Volunteers

As Volunteer Week UK unfolds from 2nd to 8th June 2025, Age Concern Hampshire (ACH) is proud to celebrate the invaluable contributions of its volunteers and to invite members of the community to join their mission in supporting older adults live well as they age.

Volunteers Week is an annual, nationwide event dedicated to recognising the efforts of volunteers and encouraging more people to get involved in their local communities. Age Concern Hampshire offers a wide range of volunteer roles designed to suit diverse skills and interests, all aimed at improving the quality of life for older people. 

Volunteering with Age Concern Hampshire offers many benefits, both for the community and for the volunteers themselves. Many people find a real sense of purpose in making a positive difference in the lives of older adults. Volunteering encourages new social connections and provides opportunities to develop valuable skills such as communication, organisation, and empathy.  

ACH undertook a volunteer survey last year to understand the motivations and benefits to its volunteers: 80% of those who responded said they would recommend ACH to a friend and nearly all said they have benefitted from opportunities to learn new skills and undertake ‘optional’ training if resources allowed. 

Beyond these practical advantages, volunteering has been shown to improve mental health and wellbeing, giving individuals a sense of fulfilment and belonging. Many volunteer roles offer flexible hours, making it possible for people with busy schedules to contribute in ways that suit them best.

Their dedication helps us reach more older people, reduce loneliness, and build vibrant, inclusive communities.
