Age Concern Hampshire Expands its Foot Care Services across the County

Age Concern Hampshire is growing its foot care services due to increased demand. As part of this growth, new clinics are being launched in North Hampshire, including in Tadley and Farnborough, with additional locations planned, helping to make essential foot health services more accessible to local residents in those areas. 

This growth comes at a timely moment, aligning with Foot Health and Mobility Awareness Month in September, a national campaign that highlights how regular foot care plays a crucial role in maintaining independence, mobility and wellbeing as we age. With many older people at increased risk of foot related issues, early attention and consistent care can make a significant difference in quality of life and the 6-weekly foot health checks identify potential issues at an earlier stage. 

“Our Foot Care service has seen a steady increase in demand, and we are proud to be growing to meet that need,” says Una Davey, Head of Commercial at Age Concern Hampshire. “The new clinics in North Hampshire will allow us to support even more people to remain active and independent for as long as possible.”

The clinics provide vital services such as toenail cutting and comprehensive foot health checks. Appointments are available every six weeks and delivered by qualified practitioners who are experienced in meeting the foot care needs of older people. Ongoing care helps to prevent issues that can impact mobility, comfort and overall wellbeing.

Helping Older People in Hampshire Live and Age Well

Age Concern Hampshire offer a varied range of options to support older people in the county to live and age well.

The charity’s Care and Wellbeing Centres make a significant difference to the lives of older individuals by providing vital services that promote health, wellbeing, social connection and independence.

Maintaining physical activity, mental engagement, and social connections becomes increasingly important as we age, playing a key role in supporting overall health and wellbeing. Age Concern Hampshire’s wellbeing groups and Care and Wellbeing Centres offer a variety of stimulating activities and a welcoming environment designed to nurture both mind and body.

Loneliness and social isolation remain significant challenges for many older people, particularly those living alone. The charity addresses this through its Care and Wellbeing Centres, which offer safe, friendly spaces where individuals can build friendships, share meals, and take part in meaningful activities.

In addition, the Help at Home service offers practical in-home support with everyday tasks such as cleaning, shopping, and companionship. This enables older people to maintain their independence, remain in the comfort of their own homes, and reduce feelings of isolation.

Family carers also benefit from tailored day care services at the Care & Wellbeing Centres, including specialist support for those caring for loved ones living with dementia. These services offer much-needed respite and peace of mind.

Each centre also offers a professional foot care service, which provides professional toenail cutting and basic foot health checks. Delivered by fully qualified Foot Health Practitioners, the service is available at various locations across Hampshire as well as at our centres, supporting mobility, comfort and overall independence for older people.

Locks Heath Community Supports Age Concern Hampshire’s 40th Anniversary with Cream Tea Fundraiser

Cream Tea Event

A cream tea event at Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre in Locks Heath, owned and operated by Age Concern Hampshire, welcomed clients and members of the public for an afternoon of scones donated by Ancasta Grove Care Home as well as cake, refreshments, and a raffle. The event raised over £200. The charity also welcomed along members of the local Rotary Club to enjoy the cream tea with clients and to present the cheque from the former Rotary President; Bob Hitchins.

Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre provides day care for older people, including those living with dementia, offering a safe and friendly environment where clients can enjoy companionship, personalised support, activities, and services such as transport and Foot Care. The centre plays a crucial role in helping older individuals remain active and independent in their communities.

B&Q employee volunteers support local older people at Age Concern Hampshire centres in New Milton and Locks Heath

A team of Employees from B&Q offered their support, time, and products to Age Concern Hampshire (ACH), to help improve spaces used by the charity and the older people it supports.  

The team volunteered to spruce up the Care and Wellbeing Centres in Locks Heath and New Milton to update the interior design, re-decorate rooms and upgrade the soft furnishings to put some TLC into the spaces used to offer innovative, inclusive and fun sessions to those who attend.  

ACh B&Q

The Centres offer personalised support for clients, many who are living with additional needs such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The centres are vital for family members and carers to give them reassurance that their loved ones are in the safest hands, in a secure environment. The offer goes beyond their centres, into the community with accessible transport options available.  

ACH offer specialist day care sessions, inclusive of activities to help with mobility, mental health, cognitive sustainability and nutrition. Clients also enjoy social interaction and person-centred care all designed to promote independence and enhance quality of life. 

The support from local B&Q employees was part of the wider Community Days programme, where groups of volunteers from B&Q support the local community by improving a community space to help make a positive difference across the communities B&Q operates in.   

Almost 300 charities will get the same help across the country, with thousands of B&Q colleagues volunteering their time to worthwhile causes.  

Marysia Noble, B&Q said, “It’s great to be helping out Age Concern Hampshire, the whole team love putting their practical skills to use and when it’s to support a good cause it’s even better. Seeing a project completed by the team gives a great sense of satisfaction.”

We provide the clients and the venue and engage self-employed Foot Health Practitioners (FHPs) to provide a 6-weekly toenail cut and a basic foot health check for each client. If the foot health check identifies further treatment required, the practitioner will recommend medical or podiatry attention as appropriate.

Age Concern Hampshire Marks 40 Years of Service with Crowdfunding Appeal to Support Vital Social Groups for Older People

Age Concern Hampshire is proud to be celebrating 40 years of supporting older people across Hampshire. Since 1985, the independent charity has delivered a wide range of services designed to help older adults live well and independently for longer. 

Over the years, the charity has grown to include Care and Wellbeing Centres, Help at Home services, Foot Care Clinics, Social Groups, Hospital to Home support, free Information Hubs and a variety of other essential activities. Staff and volunteers, drawn from all walks of life, work together to offer friendship, guidance, and care throughout every stage of ageing. 

As part of its 40th Anniversary celebrations, Age Concern Hampshire has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help deliver Social Groups that are vital for those who may be at risk of loneliness or isolation. These groups, which have become an essential part of life for many older people, are under threat due to the end of previous funding streams. Rather than introducing participation fees, which many older people would be unable to afford, Age Concern Hampshire is appealing to the public for financial support. The funds raised will contribute towards the charity’s £40k for 40 years campaign, set to celebrate 40 years of service, helping older people continue to live with care, connection and dignity.

Loneliness and social isolation can lead to depression and anxiety. ACH Social Groups offer an opportunity for people attending, to stay socially connected, access peer-to-peer emotional support which in turn reduces stress and boosts overall happiness. Attendees also benefit from physical activity from gentle exercise, structured activities support by a trained team of staff and volunteers in a welcoming and friendly environment. 

Funds raised will be used to cover the coordination and delivery of the groups.  Keeping these sessions free at the point of access remains central to the charity’s mission of inclusivity and sustained support.

Making affordable Foot Care health more accessible to older people in Hampshire

With the continuing rise in inflation, and the overwhelming research outlining the link between foot care health and mobility wellness, Age Concern Hampshire offers both regular and affordable Foot Care Clinics.    

These clinics enable Hampshire residents over 50 to access essential foot care without adding strain to their household budgets. Age Concern Hampshire’s Foot Care Clinics provide a professional toenail cutting and foot health check service by fully qualified Foot Health Practitioners.  

Each Foot Health Practitioner is professionally trained and has undergone a criminal records (DBS) check. As these clinics operate on 6 weekly basis residents can be assured that their foot health will be maintained and issues will be identified as early as possible through the foot health checks. Practitioners will not only support with ensuring toenails are kept under control but will be able to spot potential issues and advice on when to seek specialist support.    

Research shows that nearly 30 percent of older people struggle to cover everyday expenses, including healthcare.  While private chiropody appointments are often out of reach, these clinics deliver a crucial service that is increasingly important for older people across Hampshire.  

Although foot health is essential for maintaining mobility and preventing serious complications such as infections and falls, many delay or skip appointments, due to financial constraints.  Age Concern Hampshire’s Foot Care Clinics address this by offering expert affordable treatment from fully qualified foot health practitioners.

Lamb Brooks Tea Dance Supports Age Concern Hampshire During Its 40th Anniversary Year

Age Concern Hampshire was thrilled to be the chosen charity for a special Easter Tea Dance held on Wednesday, April 9, at St Michael’s Church in Basingstoke. Organised and hosted by Lamb Brooks Solicitors, the event raised £260 to support Age Concern Hampshire’s services for older people across the county. 

The springtime celebration brought together Age Concern Hampshire service users, Lamb Brooks clients, and local residents for an enjoyable afternoon of dancing, refreshments, and community connection. Led by Debbie Ward of Dancing with Debbie, guests took part in classic ballroom styles such as the Waltz and Rumba, alongside a light lunch, cake, and a well-received raffle.

Zafna Hassen, legal director in the private client team at Lamb Brooks, said: “It was an incredible event for a brilliant cause, and it was so lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves. Join Age Concern Hampshire this Volunteers Week and help improve lives of older people

As Volunteer Week UK unfolds from 2nd to 8th June 2025, Age Concern Hampshire (ACH) is proud to celebrate the invaluable contributions of its volunteers and to invite members of the community to join their mission in supporting older adults live well as they age.

Volunteers Week is an annual, nationwide event dedicated to recognising the efforts of volunteers and encouraging more people to get involved in their local communities. Age Concern Hampshire offers a wide range of volunteer roles designed to suit diverse skills and interests, all aimed at improving the quality of life for older people. 

Volunteering with Age Concern Hampshire offers many benefits, both for the community and for the volunteers themselves. Many people find a real sense of purpose in making a positive difference in the lives of older adults. Volunteering encourages new social connections and provides opportunities to develop valuable skills such as communication, organisation, and empathy.  

ACH undertook a volunteer survey last year to understand the motivations and benefits to its volunteers: 80% of those who responded said they would recommend ACH to a friend and nearly all said they have benefitted from opportunities to learn new skills and undertake ‘optional’ training if resources allowed. 

Beyond these practical advantages, volunteering has been shown to improve mental health and wellbeing, giving individuals a sense of fulfilment and belonging. Many volunteer roles offer flexible hours, making it possible for people with busy schedules to contribute in ways that suit them best.

Volunteers support local charity by Revamping the 20+ year old building at Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre in Locks Heath.

Age Concern Hampshire is delighted to announce that Simplyhealth employees have generously volunteered to redecorate one of the offices at the Lockswood Care and Wellbeing Centre in Locks Heath. This act of corporate volunteering not only brightened the space that was in dire need of some ‘TLC’ after over 20 years but also highlighted the importance of community engagement in supporting local charities. 

A dedicated team of Simplyhealth employees transformed the office, creating a welcoming and uplifting environment for the staff and visitors at the Lockswood Care & Wellbeing Centre. The centre plays a vital role in providing support for older individuals who require extra assistance or are living with dementia, offering services that promote social inclusion, wellbeing, and independence. The centre also acts as a lifeline for unpaid carers by offering safe and secure respite for their loved ones.
