Many older people would benefit from attending elderly day care, but for some, simply getting there can feel like the biggest hurdle. Whether it’s limited mobility or a family member being unable to provide transport, the journey can often become a barrier to staying active, connected and independent.

At Age Concern Hampshire, we believe that care doesn’t start when someone walks through our doors. It starts the moment we arrive at theirs.

Our optional door-to-door transport service is designed to make attending our day care centres as easy and reassuring as possible. Rather than simply providing a lift, our friendly drivers and passenger assistants take the time to ensure every client is ready for their day ahead. Whether it’s checking they have their walking aid, coat, medication or anything else they need, we know it’s the little things that can make a big difference.

We also understand that families and carers often have their own worries. That’s why, where appropriate, our team can help make sure a client’s home is secure before leaving, providing valuable peace of mind for everyone involved.

For many of the people we support, this service is what makes attending our centres possible. It removes one of the biggest barriers to staying active, connected and independent, while giving families confidence that their loved one is being cared for from the very beginning of their journey.

And our support doesn’t end when the day is over.

After a day filled with conversation, activities and companionship, we take our clients safely home, helping them back into their property and making sure they are comfortable before we leave. We know that returning home can be just as important as arriving, and we’re committed to ensuring every journey ends with the same care and compassion with which it began.

This personal, door-to-door approach is just one of the ways we strive to make life easier for older people across Hampshire. It’s an extension of the care we provide every day in our centres and reflects our belief that every client deserves to feel safe, valued and supported throughout their entire experience with us. And a trip on our mini bus is always guaranteed to bring laughter and joy, thanks to our wonderful team of drivers and volunteers – whether they’re starting a singalong or simply there for a chat or to ensure your loved one is safe and comfortable.

Age Concern Hampshire Expands Support to Reach More Individuals in Need

Age Concern Hampshire, a local charity dedicated to supporting older adults in Hampshire, is pleased to announce the expansion of its Help at Home service in Andover, Basingstoke, Locks Heath, Havant, and neighbouring areas. Through expansion of the Help at Home service, the charity aims to reach more individuals who are struggling with daily chores due to reduced mobility, higher fall risks or declining health. 

 

The Help at Home service is designed to provide practical, day-to-day support to older adults, helping them maintain their independence and quality of life. This expansion will allow Age Concern Hampshire to assist a greater number of individuals, ensuring that those in need receive the help and support they deserve. 

 

As a result of this expansion, Age Concern Hampshire is actively seeking compassionate individuals to join its team of Home Helpers. These rewarding roles support older adults and play an essential role in maintaining independence and enhance their quality of life by providing personalised assistance with tasks such as housework, laundry, meal preparation, shopping and trips out, while also providing invaluable companionship.

Volunteers Needed to Assist Older Individuals in Hampshire

Information Service

Age Concern Hampshire is seeking volunteers to assist vulnerable older people, supporting them with form-filling tasks. As part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older individuals, Age Concern Hampshire recognises the importance of providing practical assistance to those facing challenges in navigating paperwork and online form-filling processes.

Form-filling can often be daunting for older people, particularly those who may be living alone, facing health-related issues or struggling to access vital information online. These tasks can pose considerable obstacles in older individuals accessing crucial services, benefits, and support.

Committed to addressing these challenges, the charity’s information service provides tailored home visits to aid with form-filling, helping individuals who may feel overwhelmed or isolated by the digital divide. The form-filling service, led by volunteers assists isolated and vulnerable individuals, ensuring they receive the vital guidance and support required to accurately and efficiently complete essential forms and applications such as attendance allowance or blue badge applications.

Addressing the Urgent Need for Accessible Support Services for Older Adults in Hampshire

Hampshire’s ongoing demographic shift highlights the critical need for accessible support services for older individuals. With a staggering 25% of the population already aged 65 and over, and projections indicating a further increase in the years ahead, the necessity for comprehensive and easily accessible support services has never been more pressing.  

In response to the challenges posed by Hampshire’s ageing population, it’s vital that older residents are able receive crucial information and support, which will allow them to thrive in their communities. With this objective in mind, Age Concern Hampshire has launched a new Location Finder feature on their website. This new function offers older individuals and their families an easy and efficient way to discover the comprehensive range of services available in their local areas.

Age Concern Hampshire and Clodagh McKenna Join Forces for Dementia Action Week

Age Concern Hampshire, in collaboration with their charity patron Clodagh McKenna, are proudly marking Dementia Action Week with a series of activities aimed at supporting individuals affected by dementia across the region.  

 

Dementia Action Week takes place between the 13-19th May, aiming to raise awareness and encourage collective action in support of those living with dementia. Age Concern Hampshire will be celebrating the week with cook-along recipes created by the charity’s esteemed patron chef, Clodagh McKenna. This special event will take place at Age Concern Hampshire’s Care and Wellbeing centres and will be prepared by their dedicated cooks throughout the week.

Charity Patron, Clodagh Mckenna said “I am so honoured to be the Patron of Age Concern Hampshire and help to raise awareness for the charity and the essential dementia support they provide. What we eat has a huge impact on our brain function, a diet of vegetables, fruit, pulses, oily fish (such as salmon) can help lower the risks and slow down the development. During Dementia Action Week, we will be sharing healthy recipes that are focused on these ingredients.” 

 

With proper nutrition playing a crucial role in maintaining overall health and wellbeing, the event will include meals rich in essential nutrients, including Vitamins B6, B12 and antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, which are known to support brain health. Adequate nutrition can help support cognitive function and may even slow down the progression of cognitive decline.  

 

Recognising the importance of supporting cognitive development in dementia clients, Age Concern Hampshire will also be offering a range of activities throughout the week. These activities have been specifically tailored to cater to the unique needs of individuals living with dementia, with a primary focus on nurturing cognitive abilities.

IT Sessions to Enhance Digital Inclusion for Older Adults

Age Concern Hampshire is delighted to announce the expansion of its IT sessions to now include Locks Heath near Southampton, alongside its existing sessions in Basingstoke. This expansion aims to broaden the availability of personalised IT support to older individuals in the community, allowing them to navigate the digital world with confidence. 

With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, the 1-1-1 IT Sessions will cater specifically to older individuals, recognising the unique challenges they may face in adopting and utilising technology. Through personalised sessions, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their IT skills, tackle hardware and software issues, set up new devices, and navigate online with confidence.

 Several factors contribute to digital exclusion among the elderly, including limited access to advice and support, lack of familiarity with digital devices and applications, and apprehension or fear of technology. These challenges can make it difficult for older adults to bridge the digital divide. By providing the skills and resources needed to navigate the digital world, sessions aim to tackle digital exclusion and create an inclusive and equitable environment for older individuals to learn new skills and gain confidence. 

IT sessions are overseen and run by volunteers who are experienced and trained in offering personalised guidance and IT support tailored to individual needs. To ensure efficient allocation of resources and personalised assistance, all sessions must be booked in advance.

Age Concern Hampshire’s Care and Wellbeing Centres continue to support their clients, making quality elderly care accessible to all members of the community. Believing in providing options that cater for a diverse range of needs and financial circumstances, their centres offer personalised care, engaging activities, nutritious meals and transport. 

Many individuals and families may not be aware of the financial support that can significantly offset the costs associated with day care for older members of the community. The Charity’s information hub team is available to provide information and signposting regarding local authority funding and attendance allowance, making it easier for clients to access financial assistance.

With residential care being so expensive, we’re proud to offer inclusive and supportive day care services, which provide valuable respite to family and carers”.

This flexibility makes Day Care a more affordable alternative to other care options and allows caregivers respite and to balance their own needs whilst ensuring their loved ones receive the necessary care and support. 

As dedicated dementia specialists, centre staff are trained to support clients and their caregivers by providing a varied range of activities. These aim to enhance cognitive function, promote emotional wellbeing, and encourage social interaction to make a positive difference for those living with dementia.

Age Concern Hampshire announce changes to their Kingsclere Social Group to include a complimentary light lunch. Designed to offer older adults in the community access to engaging activities and companionship, the introduction of a light lunch allows clients to enjoy a tasty bite, whilst benefitting from activities to support wellbeing. 

Maintaining proper nutrition is crucial for the overall wellbeing of older individuals, especially when faced with hurdles due to reduced mobility. Recognising the need for simplicity, the new initiative ensures older members of the community have access to an affordable lunch in a warm and friendly space.  

Brogan Rehill – Fundraising Manager at Age Concern Hampshire said “We’re so delighted to now be offering a light lunch at our Kingsclere social group. Our focus is on creating an environment that not only provides engaging activities but also provides companionship and a sense of belonging. The addition of a light lunch is a significant step towards creating a more vibrant and inclusive environment for older adults in Kingsclere”.  

The weekly volunteer led group offers a warm and inviting space for older people to make connections, exchange experiences, and build valuable friendships. Run by committed volunteers, the initiative supports the Kingsclere community by addressing social isolation challenges and promoting active community participation. 

 Situated at Rose Hodson Court in Kingsclere, the weekly social group will now take place every Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm (previously 10-12 noon). Addressing social isolation among the elderly community

Social isolation poses a significant threat to the physical and mental health of older individuals. Recognising this challenge, Age Concern Hampshire are proud to offer their Help at Home Service, aimed at providing companionship, practical support, and a sense of connection for those living alone or experiencing social isolation. 

The service provides support with household chores such as laundry, housework, meal preparation, and dog walking. Due to physical challenges and limited mobility, daily household tasks can become significant hurdles for older people. Operating across Hampshire, the Help at Home service is currently available in Stubbington, Lee-on-the-Solent, as well as Fareham, Havant, Basingstoke, Andover and surrounding areas.

By addressing the physical challenges linked to reduced mobility, the service also seeks to promote wellbeing and mitigate feelings of loneliness, along with the associated risks of depression and cognitive decline. All their Home Helpers undergo DBS checks and receive training to provide companionship, aiding in the alleviation of social isolation and supporting independent living.

Help at Home services are tailored to meet individual needs and preferences.
